This Love Your Body Day (October 18), join MCNOW for a special screening of Straight/Curve: Redefining Body Image. This event will take the place of our October happy hour.
Straight/Curve explores the relationship between fashion and body image, and follows the people fighting to challenge society's unrealistic and dangerous standards of beauty. The film will be followed by a curated discussion and program.
You may view the film trailer here.
Suggested donation: $10 or 1 box of tampons + 1 package of unscented sanitary napkins (tampons and pads will be donated to I Support the Girls and NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland respectively; see below).
We will have a special guest, from NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, joining us this month. She will be talking about a program they are doing to collect unscented sanitary napkins for women and girls in prison in Montgomery County. Please bring unscented sanitary napkins (in sealed packages) to the meeting.
We will also be collecting items to donate to I Support the Girls (per usual). Any non-unscented sanitary napkins will be donated to them. For Support the Girls donations, please see FAQs below. Support the Girls is a great organization, started by a local Silver Spring woman, that distributes donated bras and menstrual products to homeless women and girls across North America (and in 4 locations worldwide).
FAQs:
What kind of bras are accepted?
Any kind of bra, used or new, in good condition.
What types or styles of bras are accepted?
Regular bras, underwire bras, sports bras, training bras, maternity bras, nursing bras, lacy bras, cotton bras, satiny bras, camisoles, shapewear, and more.
What bra sizes are accepted?
All sizes are accepted, from training bras to custom made extremely large.
What kind of tampons or sanitary napkins are accepted?
Any brand or size, as long as they are individually sealed.
I have an opened box of tampons or package of maxi pads. Can I still donate them?
Yes. Please tape up the box or package with all the individually sealed items inside.
What menstrual product is needed most?
The best product with the most impact would be overnight maxi pads with wings.
Are reusable products, such as menstrual cups, accepted?
Menstrual cups are a great idea, however, many of the cup manufacturers ask that the user use “boiling” water to sterilize. Boiling water is hard for many homeless people to find, however, if Support the Girls receives cups, they would absolutely find people to take them.
